SPENCERIAN: with Bill Kemp
Saturday and Sunday, April 2d and 3d
9 AM to 5:00 PM - COST: $85
Village Corner Restaurant, Stone Mountain

Bill Kemp has been practicing his craft for over 20 years.  It all started at a young age where he enjoyed lettering and different forms of lettering.  He did not really explore that avenue until 1978 when he took his first class at the University of New Mexico's Continuing Education Program.  From there he has been taking classes through his calligraphy guild in Albuquerque; Escribiente.

The pointed pen has been his real favorite.  His focus has mainly been in Engrosser's Script (more commonly known as Copperplate) and Spencerian Handwriting, and has studied under Pen Masters Bill Lilly and Specerian master, Michael Sull.

Bill has been teaching in Albuquerque for several years through Escribiente and on his own.  For the pass three years he has been invited to teach at Castle in the Air, in Berkeley, California.  The classes that have been repeated several times are Spencerian, Illumination and Copperplate.

•  As we learn the capitals I will stress that the students write the capital letter with lower case letters to form words. This will all me to see how the student is forming the capitals and the spacing of the lower case letters to the capital. About Spencerian:
Spencerian is true American hand (script). It was developed in the United States in the early 1800's by Platt Roger Spencer. He was born in November 1800, in Fishkill , New York and moved to Geneva , Ohio at the age of ten. Spencer developed the hand/script based on the elliptical curves and shapes he saw in nature all around him, and especially from the rocks and pebbles along the shores of Lake Erie .

Spencer wrote several books and developed his writing system that was used in a majority of the public schools throughout the United States in the late 1800's. After his death in 1864 his sons cared on his teaching methods and principals to the turn of the century. In the early 1900's when the public school system wished to standardize the handwriting taught throughout the United States , Spencerian Script lost out to another handwriting system called the Palmer Method (who's developer was a student of Platt Roger Spencer, his name was Austin Palmer).

Platt Roger Spencer was considered to be the father of the Golden Age of Ornamental Penmanship which was from 1850 to 1925.
