Dave Wood is an extraordinary talent who uses calligraphy as just one element of his overall creative view. A student of Donald Jackson, the Australia, Dave is one of only two in that country to be named a Fellow of the highly respected, London based Society of Scribes & Illuminators.
Dave exhibits his work successfully in galleries and collections throughout Australia as well as overseas, and opened Australia's first and only Calligraphy Gallery, furthering his ambition to have calligraphy recognised as an art form in its own right. Additionally, he has created a book, The Painted Word, that displays his work and the style he is famous for. FOTA is fortunate to offer Wood's teaching expertise in this two-day workshop aimed at extending the artist's visual vocabulary.
Various design concepts will be explored using paper captions, highlights and two dimensional images which include calligraphy as part of the overall image. Students will be encouraged to broaden their view of calligraphy, using words in conjunction with sculptured images to create an elegant piece of art.
The workshop investigates material to create an illusion of 2 dimensionality with different techniques including cutting, folding, creasing and bending paper. Dave will demonstrate the concept of creating a 3D illusory effect using the paper to create shadows.
